the Allied forces from positions in the trees to which they had tied
themselves. Ray was on of the lucky survivors who served in that part of the
word, but he did suffer a bout of malaria. After his discharge, Ray helped on
the farm for awhile, then went to work in Ackley for Artis Hatchery for a time
before beginning a long period of employment as a custodian the Ackley
Elementary School. Ray met and dated Lucile Sessler of Ackley, and they

of First Ave. and State St. in Ackley for many years. It was conveniently
located to the library, the school where Ray worked, their church, the post

pride in the upkeep of their house and small yard, enjoyed having some flowers
and for a time kept a few chickens in a vacant lot next door. For many years,
Ray was part of a successful bowling team, and those trophies remain some of
his prized possessions. One of his best games was a 247, and he had the thrill
of picking up the 7-10 split. He and Lucile both loved to go for drives and had
the pleasure of car trips to visit John in Tennessee and to the Amana Colonies
Ray like to do woodworking projects, and in retirement enjoyed being part of an

mother's side was German, and she recalled that her grandmother never learned
to speak English. Lucile's early years were spent on the family's farm, but
when her father died when Lucile was still very young, she and her mother
relocated to a house in Ackley. She was baptized and grew up in the church
family at St. John's UCC and attended local schools, graduating from the Ackley
High School in 1939. A pleasant and sociable person who took pride in her
appearance, Lucile enjoyed school and her classmates and participated in some
of the available extracurricular activities, including Glee Club and Girl
Reserves. Following graduation in 1939, Lucile spent the next few years earning
money by cleaning houses. She came to know Ray Homan and after he returned
safely from service in the Philippines during WWII, Ray and Lucile began a long
and successful marriage on August 6, 1946. They lived nearly all their married
lives and raised their only child, John, in the same house, which was
conveniently located to downtown, schools, their church, post office, the
library and the doctor's office. A stay at home mom, Lucile kept busy with
homemaking and gardening. She belonged to the Willing Workers group at her
church, quilted at church, and taught Sunday school. For a time, she and Ray

fancywork. After Ray retired, they both enjoyed fishing, antiquing, and going
for rides, especially an occasional car trip to visit their son and daughter in
law in Nashville, TN. When increasing debility made it necessary for Lucile to
