Wednesday at the St. John's United Church of Christ in Ackley with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4 P.M. Tuesday at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.

On January 11, 1918, twin boys arrived in the Butler co. farm home of Frank and Margaret Puls Homan. They were named Raymond and Roy, and grew up with a sister, Helen. Ray had a typical childhood on the family far, learning that the work everyone did was of vital importance to the operation. He was educated from 8th grade in country school and recalled how cold the schoolhouse was until the stove could make it comfortable and the work it took to see there were supplies to fuel the stove. Part of the WWII generation, Ray served his country in the Field Artillery of the Army's 61st Cavalry. His unit suffered heavy losses in action in the Philippine's as they landed on beaches defended by the entrenched Japanese, some of whom fired on the Allied forces from positions in the trees to which they had tied themselves. Ray was on of the lucky survivors who served in that part of the word, but he did suffer a bout of malaria. After his discharge, Ray helped on the farm for awhile, then went to work in Ackley for Artis Hatchery for a time before beginning a long period of employment as a custodian the Ackley Elementary School.
Ray met and dated Lucile Sessler of Ackley, and they were married on August 6, 1946. They bought and lived in a house on the corner of First Ave. and State St. in Ackley for many years. It was conveniently located to the library, the school where Ray worked, their church, the post office and downtown. They raised one child, a son, John.
The Homans took pride in the upkeep of their house and small yard, enjoyed having some flowers and for a time kept a few chickens in a vacant lot next door. For many years, Ray was part of a successful bowling team, and those trophies remain some of his prized possessions. One of his best games was a 247, and he had the thrill of picking up the 7-10 split. He and Lucile both loved to go for drives and had the pleasure of car trips to visit John in Tennessee and to the Amana Colonies Ray like to do woodworking projects, and in retirement enjoyed being part of an early morning card group who met uptown.
Ray joined Lucile as a resident of the Village in April 2005. Ray attended St. John's UCC in Ackley and has been a proud member of the American Legion since 1946.
His remaining family is small. He is survived by a son, John, and his wife, Cindy Homan, who live in Nashville, TN; a sister, Helen Bergman of Ackley; a sister-in-law, Sophia Homan, who passed away on Monday morning, March 10th; nephews and nieces, Merlyn Cordes of Des Moines, Linda and Larry Epeley of Polk City, Gail and Doyle Osburn of Polk City, Joe and Kay Bergman of Cedar Falls, Cindy and Keith Balvanz of Wellsburg, Deb and Ron Kuhfus of Iowa Falls, Jim and Donna Bergman of Ames, and Mary Braga of Ankeny.
